Pose These Questions to Professionals Before Hiring an HVAC Contractor
Hiring an HVAC contractor who you can trust with the care of your home’s HVAC equipment can sometimes be an arduous task. Luckily, it doesn’t have to be. Simply ask these questions and you’ll find one in no time:
Do You Have the Proper Licensing, Bonding and Insurance?
Each contractor is held to specific requirements in order to remain in business. You’re entitled to ask for such documentation in order to check the company’s legitimacy.
Are Your Technicians NATE-Certified?
As you may already know, North American Technician Excellence (NATE) is a nonprofit organization that puts HVAC technicians through rigorous testing in order to receive certification. NATE is extremely well-respected in the industry, to the point where you shouldn’t consider any contractor who doesn’t use certified technicians.
Will You Provide Me With a List of References?
A trustworthy contractor will have no problem handing over a list of references. Once you receive it, be sure to call everyone on the list and ask about his or her experience with the company, including the quality of work, time completion promises and other potential concerns.
Do You Have Experience With My HVAC System?
The majority of homeowners use traditional systems like furnaces and A/C systems for their heating and cooling. If you use an alternative source of energy, such as geothermal or solar, you want to make sure that the contractor is well-versed in their operation and maintenance needs.
Should I Expect a Home Evaluation?
A home evaluation should be expected soon after hiring an HVAC contractor. This is a great way for your home’s energy efficiency to be analyzed. A technician will also be able to identify potential problem areas, which can save you money in the future.
Can I Get Everything in Writing?
Before you hire a contractor for any specific project, you should expect everything in writing, from the estimated cost to the equipment to be installed.
